The BMW M2 is the new entry level car from the M Division. Boasting all the markings of a hero car, it is lighter....

- Cookie Cutter Quote From Every Auto-Journo

While everyone is creaming over how it’s so light... the reality is, it’s only down 80 lbs compared to an M4. That’s still a heavy ass car.

Everyone compares the M2 vs M4 like they do the M4 vs M6. Big difference Mr Auto Journo. Stop being lazy. The M2 and M4 virtually weigh the same.

Holy shit. 3500 lbs for their “smallest” BMW?

BMW is so out of touch. Why do cars need to weigh any more than a ton? This madness needs to end. When will someone step up and say, let’s stop building porkers and start offering sub-1 ton cars with amazing MPG and acceleration and cornering? There is only one number that can make a car better performing in every way possible and that is weight.

Seeing the weights of modern cars always makes me sad. That small, 2-door coupe M2 weighs literally 1000lbs more than my small 2-door coupe.

Thanks BMW, but I’ll take a Camaro SS over this.

Aaw shit. Safety tech is making a car I’ll never buy too heavy. That makes me sad :(

My Honda Accord with 4 doors is 3300 lbs. Sad.

I think I'd rather have a Camaro SS 1LE.

Jalopnik has actually mentioned this before:

http://jalopnik.com/the-bmw-m2-is-…

Also, the weight of a car isn't necessarily bad, but it's the effect the weight has on the performance. If a car performs worse as a result of being heavier, then the extra weight is bad. But if it is magically engineered to perform exactly the same as a lighter car would despite the weight (basically impossible though), then that's not a problem IMO.

There’s easily 300 lbs of ugly they should be able to get rid of.

A V8 Camaro weighs nearly the same.

That extra 14k for the M4 buys a lot of carbon fiber and other weight savings... They generally should just be talking up the overall power and package for the price rather than bringing up the weight. Hopefully the overall package also works well given that it’s still generally smaller overall.

Even the regular SS weighs about the same.

How much shorter is the wheel base vs the M4? Also, what is the weight difference between a V6 ATS Coupe and a V6 Camaro?

I’m honestly confused, a 2 series is significantly smaller than a 4. Where’d the weight come from?

Edit: A 228i is 3334 lbs where a 428i is 3470 lbs. That's still a small gap...

So if it's a four door, my company will allow it under our auto allowance program.

True, the SS is the new car I most desire in my garage, but of course it would be even better on the alpha platform and an LT1 under the hood.
